Logitech mouse ‘software’ & Leopard 10.5.X & — don’t…

UPDATE: List of pain imposed by Logitech software

I am sorry Apple, you may be superb design and style gurus in most things you do, but I do not like the “tilt to use” second mouse button. I MUCH prefer a real second button, because it simply works. I feel, rather like the square Allegro steering wheel from the 70’s(?), the design of the Apple Mighty Mouse, as far as the second mouse button is concerned, owes all to fake cool and none to user benefit.

OK. So no big problem, don’t buy one if you don’t like this.

So I bought a Logitech mouse. The result, the hardware team at Logitech have done a superb job in terms of design and production, I am a happy owner. The software team have apparently written some software that kills your Mac in more than one way, depending upon some dull variables.

For me, the death-by-software, courtesy the Logitech software team, was a Mac where mouse clicks would be responded to after a slight delay (0.25s?, 0.5s?) or a longer delay (3, 4, 5s) to the point where I would find myself with the pointer over an OS or App button going “click, click, click, click” until finally the click ‘took’ and off I went again.

The intelligent person would ask, why did I put up with this? Why did I install the software in the first place? Well I installed it because, it seemed, without it my pointer over web page links would not turn into the hand, my pointer over Dock icons would not make the Dock react. In short, it seemed OS X needed the Logitech software installed. Why I put up with it is more subtle. The problem was not there all the time, when it was there it varied in perniciousness and finally, I did not know (although I think I suspected) that it was the Logitech software.

Now I have used the Logitech Uninstall App (in Apps/Utilities for me), and rebooted, the pointer no longer has the dead feeling (lack of response to links, Dock hovers). Why I don’t know, perhaps due to me being on 10.5.5 now and not 10.5.<5. So no need for Logitech software (not that I would have installed it anyway) and now MY UI IS BACK! YES! It is SO GOOD to be able to click and get an INSTANT responce, every time.

I may, if I feel the need, try out SteerMouse as an alternative (hang on, ‘alternative’ implies Logitech is an option — it ain’t, it’s 100% rubbish) if I want to get extra control. But for now, I am basking in getting my Mac back.

Logitech management, HOW can you allow this situation to begin let ALONE have continued for so long.

Apologies for shout-y upper text content here, but passions ran high. Maybe I’ll edit it later. I can now, because I can click on the edit button!

List (building) of pain imposed by Logitech Mouse software on Mac

 • Click to sample colour: as you move the mouse over solid colour, the sampler jitters from hovered over colour to other random colours - pick your click moment right or the sample is wrong.
 • Click a button: and it may respond right then, or up to 3 seconds later (or less) or not at all, so you end up going ‘click, click, click, …’ and hoping when it picks up, you won’t have clicks spare that trigger some other, unwanted action.
 • Save a file in Fireworks CS3: And maybe you will receive an error ‘…unable to save…’. Seems impossible this was caused by Logitech LLC mouse software on the Mac, but, since removal, Fireworks has not done this once, it was doing it — often…
 • CRASHING: Fireworks CS3 on OS X Leopard 10.5.5 is now 100% bullet-proof robust. Staggeringly bad of Logitech to have software that is SO noxious. I am appalled, but, now I have the fix, delighted to be out from under the Logitech (software) cloud.
