The Mac OS X backup application, SuperDuper, has long been a highly regarded backup application for the Mac.

Recently I returned to using SuperDuper, after it was issued in a version that was designed to work with the new stuff and new challenges in Leopard (OS X 10.5.X).

In the meantime, between my move to Leopard and the new version of SuperDuper, I had been using Apple’s Time Machine with my external backup disk. So it was only when I got a second backup disk, that I was able to return to using SuperDuper. Which I did, just now.

Outcome: problem, answer provided — fixed. I was finding SuperDuper, which was set to sleep my Mac once it had completed, was instead crashing on exit. I emailed the guys at SuperDuper. Within a few hours they had emailed back to ask if I was using a Logitech mouse (I was). That, it turned out, was the cause of the crash — apparently, the Logitech helper application (that loads even if you shift+login to avoid all auto-launch applications from starting), is thought to cause problems for several applications.

As soon as I had heard this, I recalled reading somewhere else, that the Logitech mouse software on Mac was less then perfect…

Solution; set SuperDuper to ‘Do nothing’ on completion and the Logitech software is unable to trip it up. Many thanks to the heroes over at http://www.shirt-pocket.com/.

FOOTNOTE: I use both SuperDuper and Time Machine. They are beautiful compliments of each other, read more: http://tinyurl.com/3y3dd8, particularly from “Time Machine. As far as Time Machine goes…”.
