An excellent article by John C. Welch of InformationWeek makes it painfully obvious that there is no contest here.

Mac OS X is a beautiful UI (imperfect for sure but really very, very good) and Windows Vista is, er, better than XP?

[is Vista better than Mac OS X?] at the human level? Not even close.

And:

Vista reeks of committee and design by massive consensus, while OS X shines from an intense focus on doing things in a simple, clear fashion and design for the user, not the programmer.

To pick out just one example of the differences between these OS’s, I feel sorry for the person responsible for the fact that background Windows in Vista have interface elements that look like they are already the focus of the user. Yuk.
